Short Story- Final Draft

The Extraordinary Calculator

Author’s note: This is a story about the main character going to the future and bringing back something cool for his robotics assignment. He has problems on the way though.

There was a boy name Edward Pham. He always wanted to have the coolest projects in his class. Of course though, he never did. When his robotics project was coming around the corner he knew he was going to get the coolest project. He just wished that something or someone could help him. Then he found something a little strange but it was going to help him a lot.

Ring! The last bell had rung and Edward sprinted all the way home until he ran into a strange calculator that was on the ground. “What’s this?” he wondered, “I guess I could use it for my math homework.” Then he kept on sprinting home.

When he finally got home he just wanted to see if the calculator worked. So he typed in 2190 and pressed enter. Complete silence fell. All of a sudden the calculator was booting up to life. He could hear the gears in the calculator ticking. Then the calculator started to glow and asked, “Future or past?” Edward tapped on future and the calculator was glowing even brighter. The gears were bursting with ticking and the hum of the calculator was getting louder and louder. Edward could feel the calculator vibrating in his hands. It was getting hotter and hotter, and then the calculator died making a click sound with the screen pitch black. “Come on!” Edward shouted madly, “Why does everything I touch break?” Edward threw the calculator at the floor and looked at the time. It was already 11:00 P.M. Edward quickly went to bed and fell fast asleep.

Edward wakes in a strange place with electronics everywhere and a robot flies in and gives Edward a newspaper. The date was 2190. “What?” Edward says, “What is this.” Edward sprints out of his room. He realizes he’s in a hotel. “What is going on?” Edward thought. He sprints out of the hotel and a sign says “Dedicated to the Pham family.” He realizes he traveled to the future and turns around horrified. The cars were flying over the road.

“Where am I,” Edward asked himself, “Ok I’m definitely in the future. What’s this?” Edward finds a piece of paper and it said 100 hummingbirds. Edward runs back in the hotel and asks a clerk at a desk. He asks the clerk if this was money or something.

“You’re rich,” the clerk said, “You could buy yourself a house with that.”

Edward was still confused about everything but he realized that it wouldn’t hurt to get something for his robotics project then he got an idea. He should go to the grocery store and bring back cool food. Edward sprinted back outside and tried to call a taxi. Edward trips and falls onto the road. “Oh no,” Edward screams. A taxi wasn’t flying and it was going straight for him.

Edward opens his eyes and the taxi stopped. “Am I dead,” Edward thought, “No I can’t be.” He sees a man come out of the taxi.

“Do you need a taxi or do want to get run over by a car,” the man asks. “Well come on,” the man said.

“Take me to the nearest grocery store,” Edward said, “Go fast too.” Edward didn’t know how much time he had so he wanted to go quick.

“Here we are. The biggest grocery store in town,” the man said.

 “Thank you,” Edward said.

The man zoomed away. Edward looked for about an hour and found this little remote control. He pressed the voice control button and said cake into it because the first that came into his mind was cake. Out of nowhere a cake appeared in front of him. So Edward thought it was cool and bought the remote control and got outside. He gasped. He didn’t have the calculator with him. It was gone.

“What do I do,” Edward asks himself. He calls a taxi and tells the driver to step on it. When Edward gets to the hotel he searches everywhere in the hotel. When the sun sets he wishes he didn’t even find the calculator. He throws himself on his bed starts to cry and finally falls asleep.

Edward wakes up in his own house with the calculator on the ground. “So it was all just a dream,” Edward told himself. He felt something in his pocket. It was the remote control. Just to see if the remote control worked and it did. Filled with excitement Edward sprints to school and he got an A on his project.

The next day he needed to bring in an animal for his science project. He couldn’t wait to get home so he sprinted all the way home. All he wanted to do was to get to the extraordinary calculator.

  1. This is AWESOME! It clearly shows the elements of a story, how it has a conflict that gets resolved, and I really loved the details and dialogue! Nicely done!
