The Learning Quotes

Author’s note: Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, is a book with awesome texts. I’m going to take two quotes from the story and tell the meaning of the quote. Also, I’m going to relate to that on a different book too.

The book Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, has four quotes that really show the character, Cole Mathews, changing from good to bad. These quotes show that he changed because the first quote has him saying that he’s better then everyone. When he almost died, he felt really lucky and started to change. He actually asked a bird if it was okay. My last quote was when he realized he was really bad and he asked why people were helping him. The interesting part is a different book, The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan, has a character that changed too. The characters from both books obviously show that they both had changed.

My first quote that I thought was interesting was after he got mauled by a bear. He was on the ground when birds were eating his flesh. He said, “Hey, look at me! I’m Cole Matthews! I’m better than you.” (p.68). The meaning of this quote is that Cole is a selfish jerk and he doesn’t care about anybody but himself. When Cole was about to die he started feeling sorry about what he did, and how he was a horrible person. Then when he saw a bird’s nest fall because of a storm, he asked the baby birds, on page 79, “Are you okay?” This is when he started to change. Finally my last quote is when he was at the hospital. Cole was angered with himself because he was a bad person. So he asked the policemen, on page 106, “Why do you guys help me?” That’s shows how he had changed.

Since that book had obviously showed that Cole had changed, I want to compare that with another character, Luke, in The Last Olympian. Luke had also changed because he wanted to change by not being evil again. So he asked for help to try becoming nice again. The quote from this book is from Luke’s friend, on page 201, which is, “He said he only wanted to talk for five minutes.” So really Luke wanted to change too, but he never got the chance.

It is really obvious that both of these characters wanted to change. Luke never got the chance to change. Since Cole got the chance though, he really was grateful for being alive for the rest of his life. Even though some characters can be very dark, they could be the nicest person in the world. The characters have the one connection that proves that people can change.
