Essay

“Mary Poppins” by P.L. Travers

If your dad wasn’t very nice to you what would you do? It was a nice summer day, but the children in “Mary Poppins” ran away from their house. “Mary Poppins” is clearly romance. In the story the main characters were sad because their father would never pay attention to them; “Mary Poppins” is by P.L. Travers. The plot line, symbolism, and behaviors of the main characters all go in to the romance plot line and the story turns out happier in the end.

The plot line story of “Mary Poppins” obviously fits in the romance plot line. In the beginning of the story the children in “Mary Poppins” are sad and lonely because their father doesn’t play with them. The story is showing how the children want their father to play with them, and the children are sad and devastated. This reminded me once when I was young that one of my friend’s dad didn’t pay any attention to my friend. My friend’s dad would always work. Now the story in “Mary Poppins” gets better. The children's nanny quit her job and a new nanny came named Marry Poppins. As the children's adventure with their new nanny goes on, the new nanny got her father fired, but that was a good thing because their father got to play with his children. The way how the new nanny got him fired was that she made him have the idea to take his children to his work. After that his children created chaos and then the dad got fired. Finally, the story ends happy when the children's dad flies a kite with them.

Even though the plot line fits the romance mode, the symbolism fits in romance too.In the beginning of the story it was morning. Morning is a romance symbol because that is normally where the minor conflict happens. Dew was described as a sense of sadness. The children's father came from work and it was still dew outside. The images clearly show that this is in Britain. The time of day was always dew, sunrise, and it thunder stormed once.

Finally, in the story “Mary Poppins” the main character is in control and it is clearly unrealistic. The two children, the main characters, are in control because they choose not to listen to their father when their father doesn’t play with them. Even though the children want to play with their father, they have different ways to keep them entertained. This is pretty much how the story goes, but in the end of the movie, their father starts to play with them.

The story “Mary Poppins” is two children who want to play with their dad, but their dad doesn’t play with them. The author is trying to show how the story ends up happy and things seemed better than they really are. When the minor conflict is resolved, the author decides to make him play with his children, so they could be a happy family.
